What to Wear in Hawaii: The Complete Guide

What-to-wear-in-Hawaii.jpeg

Aloha!  Each year millions of people visit the beautiful Hawaiian Islands.  Hawaii is a popular vacation destination because of the incredible beaches, relaxed vibe and picturesque scenery.  The tropical climate makes the weather in Hawaii a bit unpredictable - for example, it might be raining during breakfast and hot/humid during lunch!  So your typical summer wardrobe might not work on the islands.

You’re probably wondering, what should I wear to a luau?  Does it get chilly at night?  What should I wear hiking in Hawaii?  In this post I’m going to share with you everything I packed for this trip and what you should wear when you visit Hawaii.

I traveled to Hawaii in August and the weather was perfect!  My partner and I decided to share my CALPAK Astyll 30-inch spinner for this trip.  I have this set from Nordstrom.

This is everything I packed for my trip to Hawaii.

Hawaii is known for is its tropical laidback, beach style.  Locals and tourists are dressed in casual summer attire most of the time, wearing tank tops and shorts during the day.  At night, you’ll see people taking it up a notch for dinner – wearing a maxi dress or romper.  I don’t recommend packing heels for your trip to Hawaii, unless you have a special event planned.  Sandals or wedges are perfect for a nice dinner by the beach.

What to wear on the flight to Hawaii

The tropical Hawaii weather will hit you pretty hard as soon as you walk out of the airport.  I like to travel in comfortable clothes and always keep in mind the cold air and bathroom situation on an airplane.  I suggest wearing a casual dress or comfy pants with a light denim jacket or kimono.  Then when you arrive you can take a layer off and make your way to baggage claim!

What to wear to walk around Honolulu, Hawaii

The vibe in Honolulu is stylish and fun!  You’ll see people in cute rompers and dresses out shopping and dining on Luxury Row.  This is the perfect place to wear something a little nicer than the beachwear you might be wearing for most of your trip.

What to wear to the beach

Hawaii has some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen!  You just never know when you’ll stumble upon the perfect spot to layout.  I highly recommend having a beach bag with the essentials (bikini, sunscreen, sandals, towel) with you or in the car at all times.  When you’re planning on going to the beach, throw on your favorite bikini, coverup and sandals.

What to wear to a luau

Luaus are a fun way to enjoy a beautiful evening in Hawaii.  The vibe is relaxed, lively and full of Hawaiian charm.  Men are usually dressed in Hawaiian style shirts with shorts.  Women like to dress up a little more with bright rompers or dresses and sandals.  Luaus are a great place to take pictures with a beautiful background, so wear a bright, fun color or print that you feel amazing in.  If you tend to get cold easily, take a denim jacket or light wrap for that cool beach breeze.

What to wear on a snorkeling tour/boat tour

If you haven’t booked your snorkeling tour yet, do it now!  It’ll be one of the most memorable experiences of your trip to Hawaii.  You will be on a boat for most of the day, so I recommend wearing water sport sandals like Chacos or Tevas.  They have more grip and will prevent you from slipping on the moving boat.  Other than solid footwear, you should wear a bathing suit and coverup.  If you burn easily, you might consider wearing a rash guard as well.

What to wear on a hike

Hiking is a great way to explore Hawaii and see some incredible views.  You can hike through the jungle to beautiful waterfalls or along a cliffside to uncover a hidden cove.  Wherever you end up hiking in Hawaii, I recommend wearing athletic shorts, a tank top and water sport sandals or tennis shoes.  Additionally, I suggest packing a light rain jacket for those intermittent rain showers.  I loved wearing my Chacos on a few jungle/beach hikes, the thick soles provided additional stability while keeping my feet safe.  I also enjoy being able to walk right into the water without worrying about my shoes or having to put them in a backpack.
